Gastroenteritis, common illness in Summer
Following sweltering heat reaching 37 degrees Celsius, hot and humid summer weather with heavy rainfall of up to 200 mm is continuing.
Due to this weather, bacteria are multiplying rapidly, increasing the risk of gastrointestinal diseases such as enteritis. In fact, actress Han Ji-hye shared her daily struggles with gastroenteritis on her social media account.
Gastroenteritis is a common summer illness, typically referring to infectious gastroenteritis, which is a condition caused by consuming water or food contaminated with bacteria, viruses, or parasites, leading to inflammation in the intestines. In the current hot and humid environment, the risk of bacterial gastroenteritis caused by bacteria such as E. coli, Salmonella, and Campylobacter is elevated.
Gastroenteritis that occurs in summer is often caused by food, such as consuming raw seafood, undercooked meat, or spoiled eggs left at room temperature.

Common symptoms of gastroenteritis include abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and fever, which may be accompanied by nausea and loss of appetite. In severe cases, bloody or pus-filled stools may occur.
In most cases, gastroenteritis can be cured naturally with adequate fluid intake. However, depending on the patient, such as the elderly or children, dehydration symptoms may occur due to vomiting and diarrhea. In severe cases, complications such as hypotension, acute kidney failure, or hemolytic uremic syndrome may develop. Therefore, if symptoms persist for more than two days, it is important to seek medical attention for an accurate diagnosis and treatment.
Treatment may include intravenous fluids to alleviate dehydration caused by vomiting and diarrhea, as well as antibiotics, antipyretics, and antidiarrheal medications. In some cases, hospitalization may be necessary for elderly patients to receive proper nutrition.

Prevention is crucial in the case of gastroenteritis.
By practicing proper hand hygiene, thoroughly cooking all foods, drinking boiled water, and washing vegetables and fruits thoroughly under running water, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, gastroenteritis can be prevented.
Additionally, during hot and humid weather like this, increased use of air conditioners can create significant temperature differences between indoor and outdoor environments, weakening the immune system. Maintaining an appropriate indoor temperature or wearing a light jacket to maintain body temperature can help you stay healthy and enjoy the summer season.
